39ers Aging with ATTitude MARCH 2024

Swinging into Spring with a Summer ATT-i-tude!

Happy UN-Birthday MARCH 39ers! I had high hopes last year that I’d finally be able to celebrate our own special holiday properly—39 And Holding Day is on March 22nd.

“Mature” 39ers know life rarely goes according to plan. Rather than prepping for a fun, in-person party in our home base of San Diego, I’m in the middle of time-sucking apartment renovations mandated by the building owners. I heave a deep sigh with a vintage melody in mind   Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

However, please do mark your calendar for March 22nd and plan a party for 39ers in your city to enjoy, meet, and commiserate with those who know that 39 And Holding is an ATT-i-tude! At the very least, know that I’ll be thinking of you-all at 5:00p (PST) for Happy Hour! Raise your glass in a toast—cheers / Sláinte to us … 39ers always young at heart!

֎ Celebrating March 39ers ~ And More!
I know … it’s so difficult at times, to be upbeat and happy in this troubled era. So, I’m hoping this will help you want to “stop and smell the roses” or at least wish on a dandelion … okay, maybe just buy yourself a lottery ticket, ‘cause win or lose, it offers a ray of hope.

I can only assume that was the attitude in mind by whoever first registered Optimism Month with the calendars. There is no supporting link associated with it, which allows us to celebrate it any way we like—with a smile! Some of us are inherent optimists, but others struggle to move past depressing news or life events.
A habit I’ve found useful is to trick my mind … seriously. I let it wallow in anger, frustration, confusion, or sadness, for about five minutes. Time’s up! Now, find something funny, sweet, turn on some upbeat music, or, one of my faves is contact a super-friend who always makes you laugh. What other fun dates do we have for March? Here we go …

Sunday ~ March 10th: It’s time for New Moon Musings! oh my, it’s a busy day in the universe, as we contemplate our New Moon with the start of Daylight Saving Time! Celebrate March’s New Beginnings with New Moon Musings to bring a fresh, meditative boost to your month. Don’t forget, March 10 is also the start of Daylight Saving Time. If your area observes it, don’t forget to “spring forward” and set the clocks one hour ahead … yeah, I know, we lose an hour but you’ll get over it in November!

Monday~Sunday ~ March 11th-17th: is International Brain Awareness Week and it fits right in with Optimism Month. Although the sponsoring link has some good content, it’s tough to get past the 2021 last blog date. No worries! I found the Cleveland Clinic’s article of “Amazing Facts You Didn’t Know About Your Brain.” Be prepared to be astounded. And at Medical News Today you can learn “22 brain exercises to improve memory, cognition, and creativity.” Enjoy! Although you may know of some or a lot of these tips & trivia, betcha don’t know ‘em all … do you know the brain runs on electricity and can power a 25-watt bulb? Learn something new, it’s good for your brain!

Sunday ~ March 17th: Oh, if you’re of Irish heritage, you know what this day is and how to celebrate it! Traditionally, it’s St. Patrick’s Day and for a century-plus, Americans who claim Irish genes (real or not) have tipped a few pints and enjoyed the camaraderie.
Now, as one who had a grandfather with the surname Connelly (though I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting Ireland), I can say this … there are people these days who think referring to the Irish in context with drinking is offensive. I have never met anyone of Irish descent who is offended by the reference. But then, I wasn’t raised in Ireland. And today’s mores (skewed as they are) are waaaay different from my upbringing of yesteryear.
By nature, our clan anyway, takes things in stride and knows how to laugh at ourselves … something the rest of the world seems to have forgotten. And speaking only for our family, we do know how to enjoy the day, complete with beer, wine, or a
sweet Irish creme coffee. Go ahead … tell us a drunken Irish joke or limerick, and we’ll all have a great laugh! Sláinte!

Tuesday ~ March 19th: The New Moon isn’t the only time for a personal new beginning. Our first day of Spring begins today. Formally called the Vernal Equinox—also called the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere—marking the beginning of spring. With thoughts of Spring, Summer isn’t far behind! Take the day to meditate—or vegetate—your choice!

Friday ~ March 22nd:  It’s OUR day, 39ers! 😊 I created the 39 And Holding Day a couple of years ago, but life has not been cooperative to my creative endeavors in the past several years, so I haven’t been able to fully promote it. Unfortunately, this year is no different … but I am an eternal optimist … next year!
In the meantime, gather all your 39er friends together for fun, with ATT-i-tude! If you need proof that generations before us had the 39er ATT-i-tude, today is also “As Young as You Feel Day”! Why? Click the link and learn all about the movie that launched the career of Marilyn Monroe …

Saturday ~ March 23rd: It’s OK Day! Are you OK? I’m OK … for a very small word, “OK” has a very long history and nearly missed the mark altogether. Though popular in the 19th century’s general vernacular, well-known authors resisted the temptation to use it, for decades.
There’s even a book that tells stories of its climb up the ranks of public acceptance since 1839, OK: The Improbable Story of America's Greatest Word, by Allan Metcalf. NPR gave it a fascinating
article back in 2010, quoting the author’s account, "Louisa May Alcott used OK once in Little Women, and in the next edition of that she changed OK to 'cozy' ... like 'I'm cozy with that,' instead of 'I'm OK with that' -- which indicates there was something uncomfortable about it."
Funny, though, some of the article alludes to Americans’ can-do attitude and OK’s social acceptance by the time Thomas Harris’s book, I’m OK, You’re OK was written in the 1960s. Using that as an example, Metcalf suggested the word also offers acceptance.
Said Metcalf, "Based on that I'm OK, you can be different from me and that's OK, I think our country is a lot more tolerant now than it used to be." Well, we’ve certainly done an about-face on that attitude, haven’t we?
Read the article—it’s truly engaging and makes for fun chit-chat fodder.

Monday ~ March 25th: Ah-ooooo … sorry, the Full Moon makes me a little crazy sometimes. Yes, it’s time for March Full Moon Magic! As often happens, the Full Worm Moon will be just as entertaining Sunday night as it reaches its zenith in the wee hours of Monday morning. This month, it promises to appear especially large and
exciting. Do you dislike rain when you’re trying to view the moon? Surprise! That’s the best time to witness a cool “moonbow.” Yep, it’s a “rainbow” created by moonlight! Look for it in the dark sky just after sunset. Enjoy!

Sunday ~ March 31st: What’s that I hear? It’s the soft hippity-hop of the EASTER bunny! ‘Tis true, Easter arrives early this year (next year, not ‘til April 20th), and it’s time to pull out your best style for church, while making sure your eggs and goodies are well-hidden. The Farmer’s Almanac lists a host of Easter Sunday trivia that includes how its date is determined, noting that this year, it ties in with the Vernal Equinox and Full Moon! Fascinating …

֎ Monthly Song of Note

Ah, do you feel the soft, warm breeze? I know, it’s only March and it’s still freezy, not just breezy. That’s why I chose this vintage tune to help us visualize warmer days …Summer Breeze” by the Isley Brothers, takes on a little different style in this ’74 cover of Seals & Crofts’ 1972 tune. Entering the KSLQ March 22, 1974 chart at #26, the Isley Brothers’ jazzy rendition wasn’t as popular as the original and didn’t make many other popular station charts.
Even if you prefer the Seals & Crofts’ version, that it warmed up our ’74 Spring still makes it special. And the Isley Brothers are still Rockin’! M
ore tuneful tidbits to manifest your memories of 1974, and keep the Rock Rockin’ from 50 Years Ago this Month!

֎ For 39ers who Follow the Stars
Hey 39er Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20), it’s gonna be a stellar month, if you swim upstream and follow the signs! With the New Moon shining in your sign, it’s a great time for a self-makeover. You’ll have help from Venus this month. Good things can come from recreating your best, glowing image, inside and out. Finances could also get a makeover in March with a boost from your new self-confidence.
You won’t be left out of the fun this month, Aries (Mar 21-April 19)! Though you may feel the beginning of March is a little slow, that’s just your inner self prepping for a much-needed sojourn of soul-searching. Don’t inhibit yourself. You may feel the need to go beyond your standard therapy and meditative methods. Be adventurous! March 25th’s lunar eclipse will add spunk to your personal and professional relationships. Nurture them and March should be an all-round good month for Ram 39ers.

And dear readers, I just want you to know that I try my best to create an informative, aesthetically creative article for you each month. However, Blogger is not a professional hosting site—but they’re free through Google. So we’re stuck with their crummy platform that doesn’t work well to manipulate images with writing, if you aren’t a techie who knows HTML. Trust me, I’ve tried for years to write articles without gaps between paragraphs and even between sentences. Sigh. Maybe I’ll win the lottery and be able to afford a professional hosting site someday. Cheers!

39ers Aging with ATTitude February 2024

Ready to do the Hoochie Koochie?

Finally, right?! Happy UN-Birthday February 39ers! ♪ … And many more … If you’re a regular reader of this humble site, you know its monthly article is often not posted until sometime in the first week or so. It is a beleaguered product of life’s travels and travesties. All I can do is try. While it’s fairly complete, a few more images would be nice. In the meantime, enjoy …

֎ Celebrating FEBRUARY 39ers ~ And More!
The month is full of fun for 39ers of any age to enjoy more than frothy cake and frozen creamery. Get your dancin’ shoes on and see what strikes your fancy …

It’s a New Year all over the world, and though we here, began it on January 1st, if you’re a following of the Lunar New Year, you know it starts on February 10th. And so begins, The Year of the Wood Dragon. It’s an auspicious year, as the mighty dragon is believed to foster growth, progress, and abundance … um, how does a “wood” dragon do that? With fortitude!

The Wood Dragon hasn’t been seen since 1964, making it especially dynamic. According to one account, “The Wood element will have a powerful influence on ALL zodiac signs. Wood is the element of Yang. It is the energy of spring, of reaching toward the light while deepening roots into the soil.” Although the celebrations end at the Full Moon (February 24th), the Year of the Wood Dragon guides us through the year, ending on January 28, 2025, when it gives way to the incoming Snake.

So, 39ers, looking for something else to celebrate during your birthday month? Wouldn’t it be fun to create a dragon commemorative keepsake for yourself? It’s also National Embroidery Month. Although the sponsoring link hasn’t updated since 2018, I found a current option. And, it’s National Haiku Writing Month! Pick your creative poison and enjoy!

February 7th-14th: Of course, it’s National Marriage Week! It’s so popular, the week has two appropriate sponsors For Your Marriage and National Marriage Week USA. It makes me especially happy, with our own family nuptials celebrating during the week. Cheers to all and may the love, luck, and good fortune of the Wood Dragon be yours always.

February 9th: February’s special Lunar New Year basks in the glow for heightened New Moon Musings. It’s a great time to meditate, even if you only have ten minutes to breathe deep and refresh, you’ll feel the difference. I strongly recommend, however, that you make time to celebrate this auspicious New Beginning of strength and growth into the month and the year.

February 11th: Is something new noodling your little pea brain? Let it grow! It’s National Inventors’ Day. Although the sponsoring link is from WIKI, it’s still fun to read how former President Ronald Reagan issued the proclamation in 1983 to "...call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities." You’ll also be celebrating the birthday of Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). Can you name his first of 1,000 patents? So appropriate for this month: an electric vote recorder.

February 13th: Party on 39ers! Mardi Gras starts today! You don’t have to be in New Orleans to party hearty …

February 14th
: of course, it’s Valentine’s Day … Be good to your sweetheart.

February 24th: Ready for some Full Moon Magic? This month’s Full Moon is especially charmed for our

February Aquarius and Pisces birthday 39ers. It helps tie up their loose ends for the month. The Full Moon also marks the end of celebrations for the Lunar New Year, but of course, the Year of the Wood Dragon continues until February 2025. Take full advantage of this month’s Full Moon and spread the good fortune of your lunar year.

February 29th: Wait … what? I thought I was done! Nope, it’s Leap Year Day! For 39ers waiting another four years just to party ON their birthday, go for it! We talk here, about “staying young” regardless of your age—you are the embodiment of that sentiment!

And if you’re in San Diego, just for fun … 7 days a week you can celebrate your birthday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds playing miniature golf! Don’t forget your military, senior, and group discounts! (Hope you’re better at it than I am …)

֎ Monthly Song of Note
Due to time constraints, this is gonna be a short one. But no less fun! Put on your dancin’ shoes 39ers and let’s do the hoochie coochie to Rick Derringer’sRock and Roll, Hoochie Koo”! February 1974 it was heading up the chart at #21, adding more love to Johnny Winter’s 1970 tune. Recording it solo without Winter’s band, it was reportedly his only solo hit.
More tuneful tidbits to manifest your memories of 1974, and keep the Rock Rockin’ from 50 Years Ago this Month! Rock and roll, Hoochie Koo | Truck on out and spread the news

֎ For 39ers who Follow the Stars
From the
Lunar New Year zodiac to the Western form of horoscopes, we slide from airy Aquarius (01/20-02/18) into watery Pisces (02/19-03/20). Like the Lunar Wood Dragon, we’re ushering in hopeful, early signs of Spring, officially a month away.

If you’ve been feeling stagnant, you’re in for a treat this month, Aquarius! The 9th’s New Moon shines on your

need for change. Go after what you want but with empowering verve, not ruthless abandon. Be aware of others’ role in your plans and make changes with confidence. Be it a global endeavor or personal life alteration, you can do it.

Intuitive and compassionate Pisces 39ers are capable of great emotional connection to others. If you’ve been feeling disconnected from that side of yourself, now is the time to rekindle the “real you.” Use your natural instincts to mingle at parties, outings, and even business events, which may result in surprising personal and professional attachments. Throughout the month, remember to take some periodic alone time to recharge.

֎ Aging with ATT-i-tude Platitude
When life gives you a lemon, slice it up and stick it on your glass of vodka lemonade! You’ll survive if you find a way to own it.   ~ L. Rochelle
