A Single 39er’s Funny Little Valentine

As a single 39er, I am often alone on Holidays (especially the past year) and today—Valentine’s Day 💖—is no exception. When this happens, I tap into my inner child for joy and happiness, which helps keep me young in body, mind, spirit, and soul.

Many incurable romantics never lose their delight over the simple things on Valentine’s Day … flowers, chocolates, a sweet note, and an adorable plush animal … meet Cocoa …

Bought myself a Valentine’s Day gift yesterday. I licked my lips thinking of a small chocolate box to buy—I believe in treating myself on holidays when I’m alone—or maybe, especially because I’m alone.

So I trolled the “seasonal” aisle at the grocery store (obviously not looking for gourmet chocolates), and there were a couple of shelves with Russell Stover® plush pups holding a box of chocolates with a rose in the mouth. I doubt they were selling well. Unfortunately, the stem of the rose looked more like fangs on either side of the pups’ mouths. Ah well. Cute try!

Taking a step down the aisle, sentimentality took hold. I don’t know about guys, but many women will always have a soft heart for stuffed animals and all things childlike.

I weighed the price of $8 for a small box of cheap chocolates against the $8 sale price on the pups holding a little smaller size box of RS tasty sweets. Goodness knows, I don’t need the extra chocolates (which of course, never stops me), so my inner child took a closer look at the better value array of, soft, furry “Cocoa the Love Pup.”

While one might think they all look the same, I found early in my stuffed toy buying and gift-receiving life that not all adorable stuffed animals are created equal. There are always slight-to-significant manufacturing anomalies that can make or break the “cute” of a plush.

I rummaged through the shelf of tawny little guys in front of me and my attention was drawn to a shy one in front that seemed a tad “off.” Hmmm.

Pushing past him I pulled out a couple from the side and back, looking for one that better suited me. They all looked pretty much the same, with shiny red heart box, rose-fangs, and “Russel Stover” stitched on the bottom of the left paw.

Going back to the pup in front, I noticed his nose is crooked and his rose stem looked more like fangs than all the others in his “litter.” And then I saw that “Russell Stover” was sewn upside down on his paw. Out of curiosity (a writer’s bane) I pawed through two more bins of plush pups, but only the “runt’s” paw exposed an upturned brand name.

Poor baby. Definitely the less desirable of all his siblings. That was the final test … my heartstrings tugged and his destiny became my “rescue pup” for Valentine’s Day!

Finished with my shopping and returned home with “rescue” Cocoa in my care (Cocoa is the company name for him—I would have named him Buster), he sat contentedly watching me from the sofa as I settled back at my desk. Perusing the store receipt, as usual, to check my expenditures, my eyes spotted Cocoa’s line item.

That’s when I realized that the $8 I thought I’d spent on Cocoa had discounted to $4! Since their original selling price was $12, it confirmed my suspicion that these poor little plush pups were a good idea at the drawing board, yet somehow lost their tail-wagging factor in manufacturing. But still …

Happy Valentine’s Day to me for a great buy and a satisfied feeling that my rescued Cocoa would have languished with his siblings until a donation cycle (or, gasp! recycling). The point is, you might be alone, but if you treat yourself, your reward could be a fun surprise.

At every age, Love comes in many forms … pick one and enjoy your Valentine's Day!

Happy UN-Birthday 39ers FEBRUARY 2021

Warming February’s Chill with Heart

Welcome all 39ers, new and old! We have a great wintry month full of fun and an UN-birthday reminder that with age comes wry wit and wonky wisdom, to help keep you young at heart. And away we go …

Celebrating FEBRUARY 39ers ~ And More!
Let’s combine two fun monthly celebrations for February to make the whole month a tasty morsel! It’s Bake for Family Fun Month and
Great American Pies Month
… which, if you’ve had enough 39 and Holding UN-birthdays, coincides with “Day the Music Died”—Feb 3rd—and Don Macleans’ “American Pie” tribute to three magic music-makers of yore and lore.
One can’t help but wonder what future marvelous music we missed over the decades with the deaths of industry innovators Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson), and Ritchie Valens, in a 1959 airplane crash … the Day the Music Died.
So listen to Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day” and sing a tribute around the kitchen while you bake an all-American apple pie with your family! Can’t go wrong …

Spunky Old Broads Month: We get no respect … not even a link on the calendar, so you may as well hang here! As the ol’ saying goes, “We may be old but we’re not dead!” Though I object to the term “broad” for women, you’ll find plenty of spunky stuff here to ponder and partake for fun and creative thought.

February 1-7:
Tinnitus Awareness Week (first full week) – What?! That doesn’t sound like fun … which is what we’re mostly about here. This year, at 39AHC we’ll add at least one “old age” malady with info to help combat it, to the monthly list. (*See important message below.) Bear in mind, many ailments that hit you as you pass by more and more 39AHC UN-birthdays, can appear in your younger years too, like this one …
Tinnitus is a particularly annoying ailment that permeates every second of every day. I know from personal experience. Unfortunately, there are a myriad of possible causes including an underlying condition that can trigger it. Once it invades your hearing psyche, there isn’t much help for it, if it doesn’t have a detectable cause. With no discernable cure, “mask” sounds might help you tolerate it.
Actually, I’ve found myself making peace with it, as the suggestions are for me, ineffectual:
Hearing aids—too expensive for me and I don’t like things in my ears.
White noise—why bother, that’s what it sounds like to me, anyway.
Experience with tinnitus is different for everyone—find what works for you and/or how to tolerate it. Maybe someday, research will find a cure. For more information and possible solutions, I go to my general online go-to medical authority, Mayo Clinic. If you suffer from tinnitus, do learn about it and what might work for you. Back to February fun …

February 14th
: Of course, it’s St. Valentine’s Day, but it’s also a commemorative day for venerable pioneering comedian, Jack Benny’s birthday—he is attributed with coining our catch-phrase, “39 and Holding,” making this site possible!
I’m working on giving us our own special calendar listing on February 14: 39 and Holding Day. But it isn’t quite there yet—perhaps by 2022, we’ll be able to get our special party on! In the meantime,
check here for updates and if you have any party ideas for the day, send ‘em on over. And stay tuned for more info!

February 22nd:
Like I need a special day for a yummy margarita … National Margarita Day! This cosmopolitan cocktail began as a simple concoction of tequila, triple sec, and lime juice, on the rocks, with or without a salted rim. However, another innovative imbiber eventually threw the mix in a blender and voilà! Frozen margaritas gave us brain-freeze. Cool.
Now, of course numerous other creative people have added their own touches for upward of thirty variations like, the Strawberry, Watermelon, Pomegranate, and Blackberry Margarita. Cheers!

February 27th: Bee-bop-a-baby it’s National Retro Day! Especially appropriate for 39ers, as we sip our margaritas and cruise down Memory Lane for the umpteenth time! Although I’m not sure what their page is about, I’ve included their “official” special day here, because I just love the idea of going retro—any day! Of course, “retro” is a subjective term, depending on your age and what part of life you’re celebrating. For Oldies Rock & Roll Radio retro, head over to our big bro site, Blast from Your Past. It’s all fun! Rock On

For 39ers who Follow the Stars
Calling all
Aquarian (Jan 20-Feb 18) and Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20) 39ers! Time to reorganize, rewire, and  retrain your brain for excitement and fun.

Aquarius water-bearers will attract your attention this month with their wit and wisdom,
offering spot-on advice for business and great ideas for relaxation. Reward them with a fun UN-birthday party at a trendy new nightspot!

Your gentle, dreamy Pisces friends also want to please, especially in this month of love. The zodiac’s imaginative fish brings compassion, understanding and warmth to any relationship, along with flowers and candy. Combining fantasy and feelings, their UN-birthday reward is a quiet, cozy, and romantic night at home with you, and an ethereal-themed romcom. Indulge!

Aging with ATT-i-tude Platitude
Hearts and flowers are 39ers’ sweet delights. But all they really want are a couple of your hours and a romantic night.

Cheers to your Happy UN-Birthday FEBRUARY 39ers

Happy UN-Birthday 39ers January 2021 Soup’s On!

Party Hearty from Soups to Nuts!

As if new 39ers joining our ranks this month isn’t enough reason to par-tay, it’s National Soup Month!
Who else but Campbell could sponsor this special month designation?? Homemade or from a can, soup is the ultimate winter comfort food. Goodness knows, we ALL need a lot of comfort as we head into a new year of political chaos and health hazards. Bring on the soup, chocolate, cheese, beer, and throw in some fun for good measure …

Celebrating JANUARY 39ers ~ And More!

January 11th: Brownielocks—the definitive calendar site for real and totally unreal holidays and “special” days of the year—isn’t just another pretty site. Its owner has declared today, Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day! Now isn’t that cool? For example, my name: LinDee = .-....-.-.... (although capital letters are ignored in MC).
Actually, you can also learn phrases in the “dits and dahs” of the International Morse Code that’s been around since 1832. Brownielocks muses, “There is concern that within 50 years or so, this form of communication will die off due to more modern technology …”
Samuel Morse, with friends and co-developers of the then sophisticated system, (physicist) Joseph Henry, and Alfred Vail, would be terribly disappointed.

As suggested, for the phrase below I entered two spaces between each word (in case you smarties who know Morse Code are reading) to better visualize the word distinction.
-.....  .-----.-..-..-..  .....-...  --.----..  -...--...! What do you think it means? Drum roll, please …

The world has gone nuts!
… Well, you can’t argue that!
Have some fun with your friends and family and find a way to create your own Morse Code language!

January 13th: National Sticker Day celebrates the birth of Ray Stanton Avery … you office administrators likely know his surname well … as the venerable creator of Avery Dennison labels. However, it was in 1935 that he brainstormed to offer the world the first viable self-adhesive labels for price stickers, which led to establishing the Avery Dennison Corporation. And check out the Guinness World Record for Largest Sticker Ball!
While Avery was instrumental in taking stickers mainstream, apparently history shows that shrewd 1880s merchants used gum paste to apply labels to products and attract the attention of strolling buyers.
Now, of course, we apply stickers to nearly everything! Go sticker-happy today!

January 20th: National Cheese Lovers Day: OK, I had to make an executive decision about
including this special day and not include the outdated Chuck E. Cheese links that accompanied the listing. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve spent my fair share of time in their crowded and crazy cheesy restaurants, but I don’t use outdated links for ya-all.

As a bona fide cheese lover though, the day had to be noted! So to give the day its due, I found some terrific super cheesy food recipes for us to try while we celebrate 39ers and cheese!

January 24th: Attention beer drinkers! Beer Can Day is for you! Yep, a real day devoted to beer cans. Imagine that. Although the History site begins the beer can’s story with the partnership of Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company & the American Can Company in 1935, according to Wiki’s page for Krueger Beer, it actually got its tentative start in 1933.

January 24th: It’s Belly Laugh Day! There is no official link for this listed “special day,” but don’t you think it’s fun and funny, since it landed on the same day as Beer Can Day? You know … beer belly (laugh) and beer … couldn’t help m’self! LOL

For 39ers who Follow the Stars
Do you feel it Capricorns (12/22/18-01/19/19)? The energy is palpable as you begin a new year with enthusiasm. Everyone wants to start the year with a fresh outlook on life and you have the opportunity to take that to a whole new level of progress. Set your goals with the confidence you can fulfill them and enjoy the road less traveled.

And what’s in store for you, dear Aquarians (01/20-02/18)? “I have the spirit of change” is your new mantra. Trust your intuition to guide you through a new beginning … beginning being the key word … as you embark on the path of change. Grow with it gradually. But remember it shouldn’t be all work and no play … have fun too!

Aging with ATT-i-tude Platitude
Struggling with aging? Don’t. Respect the process and yourself, and opportunity to learn from the changes.
