39ers Aging with ATTitude Platitude APRIL 2023

Are You Dancing in the Moonlight?

… or the glow of a Lava Lamp? I love when old school tech finds a place in patronizing high-tech life. The following popped up last week in the fun, daily "did you know" notes I receive from Encyclopedia Britannica, and I just had to share it with you.
“Randomness is important for encryption, but computers are not good at coming up with truly random data. Cloudflare, a company that secures a significant amount of all international web traffic, uses a wall full of lava lamps to generate data that has no discernable pattern.”

Spring has sprung and daylight, moonlight, or lava lamplight, it’s a good time for 39ers to dance!

֎ Celebrating APRIL 39ers ~ And More!
Dang-it. I missed Full Moon Magic again (it’s now April 10th, sigh) … it was April 6th—I assume you celebrated the
Pink Moon appropriately.

As Full Moons signify closure, appreciation of what has gone before, and the opportunity to release what no longer works for you, I’m closing doors and making life changes that I’m hoping will open to new adventures and result in my fuller participation in this blog in the coming months. For now …

Strum a little tune or listen to your fave guitar solo for International Guitar Month! It goes hand-in-hand with music’s ability to “soothe the savage beast” with Stress Awareness Month. Take a deep breath and feel the music in your soul.

April 16th-22nd: Looking for something new-old that will add a little fun to your life and inspire memories? Find out what Numismatic Week is all about! That’s a fancy name for National Coin Week and they’re celebrating their 100th event year!
Join the American Numismatic Association in their “Our Money, Our Heritage, Our America” theme for a week-long series of events to introduce, educate and enjoy coins as they apply to our heritage. Festivities include a live webinar series—free and open to the public! A penny for your thoughts … one like this 1914-S Lincoln/Wheat Penny recently sold for more than $105K.

April 11th: Okay, let’s give it to ‘em, right now! … because, 39ers, it’s International "Louie Louie" Day! Someone lovingly established this special day years ago, but the link is no longer available. That’s okay, we’ll just keep on celebrating this ultimate party tune! It was one of our BFYP Rockin’ Radio DJs who produced the Kingsmen’s iconic version in April 1963. Want to know more about Mike Korgan aka DJ “Ken Chase” and his role in “Louie Louie”? Enjoy

April 20th: It’s that time of the month when we need to take a break, and explore where we want to go next, with New Moon Musings. Are you following your deepest desires? Have you even asked yourself what they are? Celebrate April’s New Beginnings, 39ers, with a quiet introspection … then go loudly forward!

April 23rd-29th: National Library Week: Ah, the perfect celebration for the end of Spring’s favorite month. April is fresh and feisty, just as is National Library Week’s theme, because “There’s More to the Story”! The American Library Association celebrates the event’s 65th anniversary this month.
Do you think libraries “expired” during the pandemic? Well, there is certainly more to that story. Libraries are back to the forefront of life better and more modern than ever. The week’s focus reminds us that our local libraries provide many benefits online and in-person all year long. Says the ALA, “Library programming brings communities together for entertainment, education, and connection through book clubs, storytimes, movie nights, crafting classes, and lectures.” Go. Read. Learn. Enjoy.

April 27th: Looking for a fun, quirky day to celebrate your UN-birthday, 39ers? Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day! You don’t have to be a “poet” to give meaning to the day. Simply admiring poetry in any form is enough.
Do you have a few lines or a whole poem that you quote now and again, or secretly refer to when alone? Share them! Put it in paper form and carry it in your pocket all day, or post online with #PocketPoem, to share with friends, family and colleagues. Let them see what inspires you.
Or wax creative and write your own … participate in National Poetry Month (yup, it’s April) and put a poem in your pocket today. “Hope is the thing with feathers | that perches in the soul …” (Emily Dickinson; 1830-1886)

֎ Monthly Song of Note

Ah, yes, a classic indeed! We’re “Dancing in the Moonlight” to celebrate your 39 and Holding UN-birthday (however many you’ve had), with more tuneful tidbits to manifest your memories of 1973; or to introduce you to the pearls of early Rock ‘n’ Roll. This month’s Song of Note by King Harvest is #19 on WFIL/Philly’s April 2, 1973, Top 30 chart 50 Years Ago this Month!

It's a supernatural delight | Everybody was dancin' in the moonlight This song is more than a smooth melody and ethereal lyrics. Songwriter and musician Sherman Kelly (of band, Boffalongo), wrote it as a mental escape (and wishful thinking) while recovering from a random brutal beating. Though it didn’t fair well in their own lineup, King Harvest made it an enduring hit.

֎ For 39ers who Follow the Stars
Although this month’s Full Moon (April 6th) might have manifested a vital change for you, Aries (March 21st–April 19th), you recover quite nicely. The rest of the month you are more positive and pleasantly creative in both your personal and professional activities. Keep up the good work and flow into the rest of the month with breezy flair!        While most people think you Taurus bulls (April 20th–May 20th) are stubborn and staid, April proves you can be as lighthearted and silly as the rest of us. The Full Moon freed you of a negative habit or two, and you’re ready to charge into the latter part of April, confident and relieved. There is still much to do, however, which may make you a bit reticent with others. This too, shall pass, as you work through your insecurities to blossom with Spring!

Those who love Aries and Taurus will know that Aries 39ers relate well to gifts of red, and Taurus is ever partial to earth-loving green. Do you know diamonds come in many colors, in addition to April’s blue sapphire?
😊

֎ Winding it Up!
Finally, it’s time for a little wit and wisdom. Why do I end these articles with an Aging with ATT-i-tude Platitude? Because, while getting to 39 and Holding … and well beyond … I realized at some point, that my life at every age was best with music and laughter—and mental stimulation—all equally important for a youthful life. Fortunately, as a writer, I am always curious and nurture my opinions with research, which are perfect mind-boosters.
Are you a 39er however, who has not yet discovered what keeps you young in mind, body, and soul? Maybe these little snippets of insights will help you get there.

Orig'l mini-post: 04/01/23: Spring has sprung and daylight or moonlight, it’s a good time for 39ers to dance! But first, I need to finish this blog … I’m workin’ on it and though I hate making promises, I'll try to have it posted way earlier than last month. I know, that isn’t saying much … however, barring any unforeseen circumstances, it shouldn’t be later than April 8th.

What’s in store for April 39ers? We’re talking about International Guitar Month, Draw a Bird Day, International "Louie Louie" Day, and oh, so much more! And of course, we're celebrating Aries and Taurus 39ers! C’mon back soon and check it out … in the meantime, remember, Age is a number … LIFE is an ATT-i-tude!

And dear readers, I just want you to know that I try my best to create an informative, aesthetically creative article for you each month. However, Blogger is not a professional hosting site—but they’re free through Google. So we’re stuck with their crummy platform that doesn’t work well to manipulate images with writing. Trust me, I’ve tried for years to write articles without gaps between paragraphs and even between sentences. Sigh. Maybe I’ll win the lottery and be able to afford a professional hosting site someday. Cheers!

Happy UN-Birthday 39ers MAY 2022

MAY 39ers – Age is a State of Mind

While the lead-in title is nothing new at 39 and Holding Club, it seems we all need to be reminded now and again. And since May is finally finished, there is lots to remind you that age is just a number! So think young as you celebrate May ...

Our special holiday expert at Brownielocks gives us a brief scoop on the history of this lovely springtime month: May is named after the Roman goddess Maia, who oversaw the growth of plants. Also from the Latin word maiores, "elders." So, see? We fit right in!

֎ Celebrating MAY 39ers ~ And More!

And to help celebrate the mature month of May, it’s Older Americans Month! Many sites and organizations support this designation, including the US government, on their ACL (Administration for Community Living) site. But it also fits right in the 39AHC premise too! Older Americans Month generally honors those who have passed the 50-year mark, and many of our 39AHC members fit that category! So give yourselves a pat on the back and treat yourself to a month of self-congratulatory pampering for the life you’ve lived so far.

Ten-hut! May also recognizes Military Appreciation Month. As their office site tells us: May, marked officially as Military Appreciation Month, is a special month for both those in and out of the military. Not only do we pause on Memorial Day to remember the sacrifice and service of those who gave all, but the month also holds several other military anniversaries and events, including Military Spouse Appreciation Day and Armed Forces day. A esteemed cause, and a worthy website to peruse. Do it!

May 8th: Of course, we can’t forget dear ol’ mom! It’s Mother’s Day in case you’ve forgotten. How could you? Every commercial on TV (streaming or cable), every store ad, and any other avenue of
advertising overload,  bombards us with reminders. So you have absolutely no excuse. Give Mom the credit she’s due, in person, by phone, over Zoom, or by sending a heaven-bound hug.
😊

May 12th: The story goes that Limerick Day—yes, that’s today!—popped up to celebrate the birthday of Edward Lear (1812-1888) for his stellar, creative career and notably, the fun, inane imagination of his works. After all, he did write the first Book of Nonsense! Written in 1846, the pages of limericks are mostly silly and often don’t exactly rhyme, but still fun examples of the literary form. Lear’s limericks are also predominantly “clean,” which according to Gershon Legman (writer and folklorist, 1917-1999), is literarily incorrect.
Even WIKI says, “From a folkloric point of view, the form is essentially transgressive; violation of taboo is part of its function.” In other words, m’dears, a little off-color is right on. I love this example of unknown origin:

The limerick packs laughs anatomical
Into space that is quite economical.
But the good ones I've seen
So seldom are clean
And the clean ones so seldom are comical

Create your own limerick, squeaky clean or humorously bawdy!

May 23rd: See a penny, pick it up. All day long you’ll have good luck. It’s National Lucky Penny Day! Without an official link, a little research turned up its basic origin. How much do you know about the ubiquitous U.S. penny?

Once as large as the Susan B. Anthony dollar when first mass minted in 1793, they began shrinking in size in 1856 with the Flying Eagle Cent. Our current Lincoln cent began minting in 1909. They’re everywhere now ... weighing down your pocket or purse, or perhaps collecting in jars and containers to the point of needing a wheelbarrow to redeem. Many would like to see the once-copper penny go away altogether, as its value is seen as a coinage albatross.

When you see a penny on the sidewalk, do you still pick up the “lucky penny”? If it’s tails side up, turn it over and leave it for the next lucky person!

May 30th: And of course, we finish the month off with Memorial Day. In whatever way you honor and/or enjoy the day, give thanks to the many military personnel who have given their lives to keep us all safe.

Monthly Song of Note
When you’re looking for an upbeat tune, you can’t beat Michael Jackson’s “Rockin’ Robin” from a time when we were all more upbeat. It quickly climbed to #4 on KSEA/San Diego’s rockin’ music chart by May 22, 1972. Next time you’re outside, close your eyes and listen to the birds, I swear you’ll hear them cheep, All the little birdies on Jaybird Street | Love to hear the robin go tweet tweet tweet ...
What did our Big Bro site, Blast from Your Past designate for this month’s Song of Note? Not “Rockin’ Robin” ... tune in to more tuneful fun and a full chart of MAY 1972’s top tunes,
50 Years Ago this Month!

֎ For 39ers who Follow the Stars
Do you have a
Taurus (April 20-May 20) mom? Break out the May flower! Those lovely little white gems, Lilly of the Valley. Taurus, known for your (mother) Earthiness, is often the levelheaded one in a group. In taking care of everyone else, however, you often forget to take care of yourself. This month—do it, Taurus. Soothe your soul and nurture your physical and spiritual self. Then you can do for others.

What is our dual-hearted
Gemini (May 21-June 20) doing while Taurus refreshes? The smart ones are taking a break on life, reviewing their options, and perhaps prepping to head down another path. This year, the mantra for a good many, regardless of Zodiac sign, is change ... change ... change. Be receptive, dear Gemini, to new directions and people, as you eagerly traverse this merry month of May.

Original Intro: 39ers BULLETIN 05/01/22: In keeping with my philosophy that I offer only reasons, not excuses, this time it’s true! 😊 Your MAY article full of fun and frolic, is not here yet because I attended an intense, three-day writing event, which ended today. I learned the in-depth scoop on Amazon’s recent changes in their convoluted publishing model. It’s necessary to move forward in my efforts to support myself through writing (a life choice that I’m so far, failing spectacularly). I know you’re anxious to see what’s up with Taurus and Gemini 39ers, pay your respects to Military Appreciation Month, and learn about National Lucky Penny Day! Look for the stretchy version wit and wonky wisdom, sometime May 2nd. Have you had a chance to laugh and wonder over APRIL’s Spring article yet? Check it out while you’re waiting ...
